When Children's Development Takes a Different Path

When children’s development takes a different path than expected, everyday life can quickly become both confusing and overwhelming for parents.
Many families in Västerås – and across Sweden – are today experiencing increased behavioral challenges, anxiety, emotional storms, concentration difficulties, and struggles in school.
At Brain Body Balance, we work to understand what lies behind these patterns and how the nervous system, movement development, environment, and modern lifestyle affect children’s brains.

Many parents notice that their child is not developing at the same pace as others.
This may involve language, motor skills, emotions, focus, social interaction, or motivation in school.
This does not mean something is “wrong” – only that the child’s nervous system is developing in a different way, in a different order, or at a different tempo.

In Västerås, we meet more and more families who are seeking answers to these early signals.
It is often a combination of sensory overload, stress, unintegrated reflexes, and increasing demands in everyday life.

Why development does not always follow the textbook

Common signs parents notice

Large emotional reactions to small things

Difficulty getting started, finishing, or switching between activities

Anxiety, frustration, or meltdowns during transitions

Motor challenges (clumsiness, balance, body control)

Difficulty with social interaction or group settings

Sounds, lights, or touch that feel overwhelming

Difficulty with focus, concentration, or sitting still

These behaviors are often the nervous system’s way of communicating that something needs support — not that the child is “difficult.”

When immature reflexes affect development

Primary reflexes that remain can create “disruptions” in the child’s system.
This can affect:

  • Learning

  • Focus

  • Impulse control

  • Movement

  • Body awareness

  • Regulation

In our Little Brain method, we work through play, movement, motor skills and sensory strategies that help the child’s brain “catch up.

Why so many children struggle today

It’s a combination of several factors:

  • Overstimulating environments

  • Too little movement

  • Too little outdoor play

  • Too much screen time

  • Too much sitting

  • Too high demands in preschool and school

  • Lack of sleep

  • Stress within the family

  • Nutrient-poor diet / poorer eating habits

  • Unprocessed sensory information

Children’s “inner system” is trying to handle more than it is developed to cope with.

How we support families in Västerås (and throughout Sweden)

At Brain Body Balance in Västerås, we work with:

• Sensory regulation
• Nervous system support
• Movement training
• Breathwork
• Reflexes and movement patterns
• Programs for neurodivergent children
• Support for parents and school environments

We dream of creating more Brain Body Balance centers across Sweden, so that more children can access safe, modern, brain- and body-based training.

A new way of looking at child development

It’s not the children who are the problem.
It’s the system that isn’t adapted to how children’s brains develop today.

When children receive the right support early:

– stress decreases
– the ability to learn increases
– focus improves
– self-esteem strengthens
– joy returns

Our method is playful, safe, and individually adapted.
